We've all driven around parking lots and just as we are about to finally pull into a space, someone we hadn't even seen grabs the spot.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div style="direction: ltr;">But now there's an app for that.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Googlelabs recently released Open Spot -- an experimental app only for Android 2.0 users -- designed to help drivers find available parking spaces. As you leave a parking space, you tap a button that locates the space on a Google map so others also using the app can identify potential spaces within an almost one mile radius. Echoing video game concepts, people who post availability of spaces earn Karma Points and those who are found to be entering bogus openings are called "griefers."</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Unfortunately, while the app identifies a possible parking space, there's no guarantee that the space will still be available when you find it. And it assumes that enough Android users will be in a concentrated area to make it relevant.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div style="direction: ltr;">I can't wait to read about the first parking lot accident blamed on two drivers, both peering at their cell phones, collide on their way to an available space.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Seriously, the concept of this new app suggests an interesting shift. So many apps are designed just for personal use and/or pleasure. The fundamental concept of Open Spot, whether it ever gets significant traction on its own, suggests that apps can be used for the good of society. Business-to-business marketing professionals have climbed en-masse onto the social media bandwagon according to a new survey slated to be presented in Chicago next month. Fifty-seven per cent of the marketing professionals say they are now using social media, up from 15% just two years ago. <br /><br />But despite the clamor to use social media, many marketers worry it is hard to establish the return on investment (ROI). <br /><br />The survey, conducted by BtoB magazine and the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), was presented on Aug. 4, 2009, at B-to-B Marketing in the New World in Chicago.<br /><br />Twitter tops the list of social networking sites with 70% of b-to-b marketers saying they were using it (but just 46% of business-to-consumer marketers said they were using the micro-blogging site). And Facebook was the most-used social media site with 60% of b-to-b marketers using it. <br /><br />The survey also shows a decided shift in the use of the Web. In 2007, 49% said the primary purpose of Websites was brand building; this year, just 34% said that was the purpose. Instead, the Web is increasingly being seen as a marketing tool for demand generation - 47% this year compared to 39% two years ago. <br /><br />Those who planned to make more use of social media tools said proven strategies - blogs and email - would top their priorities. <br /><br /><br />

So much buzz about Twitter, but according to Nielsen's June Netview report, Facebook continues to have a commanding lead in social networking sites. <br /><br />Of the top 10 Web destinations in June, viewers spent an average of 4 hours, 39 minutes on Facebook. Its closest rival was Yahoo, where the average viewer spent 3 hours and 15 minutes. YouTube, with slightly more viewers than Facebook, was left in the dust with only one hour and 13 minutes.<br /><br />The June report estimates the average Internet user visited 2,569 pages and spent 65 hours online. The active digital media universe is estimated to include 195,974,309.<br /><br /><br />
