Uno's Chicago Grill restaurant has built a significant online community with occasional email specials and announcements about menu changes sent to members of its "Insider Club." The promotions have been well designed and sent just often enough to build its brand and keep its customers in the loop.

On Monday, though, I think Uno missed an opportunity to positively stroke its online community.

Two "test" mailings made it out to its list Monday. One was an obviously out of date invitation to a special dinner and the other didn't include a message at all. In both cases the word "Test" appeared in the subject line.

Late Monday afternoon, Rick Hendrie the head of marketing for Uno Chicago Grill sent an apology to the list. "We messed up!" he wrote, noting they had sent an email in error and apologizing for "any inconvenience and confusion this has caused."

Perhaps I'm just more technically savvy. When I saw the emails it was obvious someone had pushed the wrong button -- a couple of times. So confusion, no, annoying, yes it was that. Spam takes up too much of my day so getting test messages on a list in mid-day, was a bit annoying.

The apology said the restaurant chain places a value on its members time, but it seems to me they missed an opportunity to actually show it -- perhaps by including a limited time coupon for a small discount on a lunch or other promotion. Not taking that extra step made them seem cheap and -- annoying.
